Got a minute? Check out our quick update on a recent Facebook announcement.

Facebook is shifting its goal of helping people find relevant content to a new mission: helping people have more meaningful social interactions. What does this mean for your news feed? Less content from businesses and more content from friends, family, and groups. Facebook says this change will reduce the reach of business pages across the platform, particularly posts that are unpaid or “organic”.

Our Take:

  • This move is another hard blow to small businesses on Facebook. It is one among many algorithm changes that demote content from Pages in favor of more personal posts.
  • It is important to note that this change is specifically aimed at organic content from Pages. Facebook says that it will not affect paid posts or advertisements on the platform. This means if your company hasn’t considered Facebook advertising yet, now’s the time.
  • We would advise small businesses not to panic at announcements like this from Facebook. Yes, organic reach has been on the decline for some time now, but that’s no reason to completely throw in the towel on Facebook. Thoughtful social media strategies and high-quality content will still prevail on the platform, although it now requires a bit more thought and effort than before. That’s a challenge we’re looking forward to in 2018!
